Yesterday I spent an hour visiting most every shop in Glasgow city centre that might sell me a cheap rain jacket. Then I spent 7 hours out in the rain, with sore feet and a sore back, interspersed with music from popular musical combo Radiohead. I was disappointed to discover they weren’t selling their own expensive raincoats, even though I’ve seen them at every other damn gig.
The band were excellent as ever. I was visited with secret guilt as I realised that there were a lot of songs that I hadn’t actually heard since the last time they were there to personally play me them. Beck was the support on that occasion, and he was excellent. Apart from the music, he had a puppet version of the band playing alongside them, and was introduced by a video in which the foul-mouthed puppets visited themselves upon Edinburgh, bought kilts, searched for gay sex and finally took the stage singing High and Dry. It was good.
This time it was Bat for Lashes, who I understand I should like very much. They weren’t really what I needed at the time, however. Sorry Bat.
Radiohead have so much material now that just about every song counts as a hit to the audience. No Creep, sadly, though I think we got that at Meadowbank. There’s always a couple of their songs that sound ten times better live: I’ve never really listened to Myxomatosis on record, but it was dazzling here, crunchy and loud. Karma Police sounded incredible.
Think I’ll listen to a record.
