From the Guardian: “David O’Doherty has taken home the main prize at the if.comedy awards – formerly known as the Perriers – in Edinburgh, the most prestigious accolade of its kind.”

Genuine newcomer Sarah Millican won the best newcomer award for her show about her divorce.

I did not see either act this year. I am sorry to have failed as your Fringe host.

In other exciting news, “the judges declined to present the panel prize, meant to reward the “spirit of the Fringe”, to a single performer, and instead requested that the £4,000 pot be left behind the bar for a final booze-up on Monday night.”

Weekday drinking may truly be the spirit of the Fringe, but I would still move to suggest that this was a wanky act on the part of the judges. Was there nothing more deserving this could have gone to?

How about awarding it to the most deserving small production that nobody saw, to help them cope with the massive debts that the Fringe will undoubtedly have left them with?

(Probably an interpretive dance about the anguish of abortion, starring a foetus.)

P.S. O’Doherty was the one who didn’t have an irritating face. Although, looking at him in that picture, he actually does have quite an irritating face. Hopefully the award will go some way towards making up for that.
